FarmGate shop open for pre-picked and U-pick blueberries through late December and January. Having purchased the land in 79, Sue and Chester leon-Cohen had already decided to plant some kind of perennially fruit-producing trees. On the basis of some advice given to them by Knox, an agricultural consultancy company, Sue and Chester would replace the large patch of pine trees on their property with some 500 blueberry trees. Considering that blueberries were still an unknown for the tastebuds of most Australians, it was a bold move. After losing over half the trees in the Ash Wednesday fires, they bounced right back, replacing the burnt growth with new trees, and became one of the first organic commercial farms in Australian history when their farm was certified organic in 1983. During the warmer months their farmshed is open every day except Monday. For the rest of the year, give them a call to see what’s fresh and available. In addition to blueberries, Emily Hill Farm also grows to sell onions, leeks, broccoli, zucchini, cucumbers, watermelon, broad beans, rhubarb, white-flesh peaches, garlic, limes and lemons. You can also find the farm on the Australian WWOOFing network, and other than promoting themselves through the Emerald Signpost, Sue and Chester rely on word of mouth to advertise their offerings. Having replaced some of their older stock, the farm now boasts over 2000 blueberry trees in production including several varieties. If you want to purchase blueberry bushes for your own garden, or if you have any questions regarding home production, make sure you pay them a visit! Tip: when growing blueberries - trees will be at their peak of production when they are between 10-15 years old.
