Growing Food – Growing Community Working together to share skills, resources and information on sustainability, horticulture, health and well-being. There are no fences around the garden with the purpose to integrate not segregate – an invitation for everyone to come share in the space, walk through, pick a herb or vegetable, sit and chat awhile - A place to belong. From a derelict piece of land formerly netball courts and further back in time the original tenniscourts – volunteers have transformed the site with wicking beds, fruit trees, Nectar feeding native trees and shrubs, many varied vegie beds, herb and flower beds and soon an addition of Bush Food plants each with informative guides on how it is used and the health properties. With grants from Bunyip Community Bank and Pakenham Racing club, the garden be installing wheelchair friendly raised wicking beds. Our tool shed (shipping container) is to be spruced up by way of a community collaboration MURAL, engaging local and indigenous artists. The garden grows from the support of the Garfield Community Association. Recycled materials are used as much as possible – some of the vegie beds are old concrete pipes the largest being 2.5 metres in diameter and some old concrete laundry troughs. Composting – many in the community bring their vegie and fruit scraps for composting to help build the soil of the garden, we look forward to becoming a Compost Hub for many more residents. Water is collected from the pergola – built from a Cardinia Shire Capital Works Grant, into a 10k litre water tank. The pergola is shared by many in the community from the Tennis club to the skate park – many visitors. Future monthly workshops are planned that teach skills in propagation, horticulture, urban agriculture and encouraging domestic food production, sustainability and healthy eating. We meet every weekend* 10am – 12noon – alternating Saturdays and Sundays to accommodate as many as possible, together we build, weed, plant, water and harvest, catching up on what is happening we share ideas and our excess produce and plants. * weather dependent Everyone is welcome.
